ADI's will normally agree that that this is one of the most stressful times. It's normal to feel this way when you have somebody looking over your shoulder assessing your competency to do any job.
What Is The Test For?
The Driving Instructor Check Test is there to maintain high standards for driving instructors throughout Surrey and the whole of the country.
As a driving instructor you have a lot of responsibility, making sure that drivers are competent, safe drivers and ultimately you could say their life is in your hands.
The check test will assess your ability to instruct, but is very different to the ADI Part 3 that you have taken. In the ADI Part 3 test, the examiner will choose the route and subject matter.In the check test, you call all the shots and the examiner will be looking to see how you deliver your tuition.
Check Test Grades
At the end of the check test you will be given a grade between 1 and 6. Grade 4 or higher means you have displayed a very high level of competence and you will not be expected to take another check test for 4 years. If you achieve a grade lower than this you can expect another check test within then next 12 months.
If your performance was not up to the required standard you will receive an 'E' grade which is commonly referred to as 'Educational'. If you do receive an 'E', don't panic, your world is not about to end! In fact many newly qualified ADI's receive an 'E' grade in their first check test. You will not be struck off from the the register, but if you fail to improve over a period of time, then this could happen.
The important thing is that you learn from this and move forward. Like every test you have taken, it is important to prepare as best you can.

In order to be fully prepared for your check test, we offer specialised check test training, delivered by grade 6 driving instructors. As they have achieved a grade 6, they know exactly what the examiner is looking for and the skills you need to demonstrate.
